The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa is a Japanese residence status for foreign workers who want to work in specific industries and have a certain level of skill or knowledge.

  • Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa is a residence status for foreign nationals who want to work in approved industries and meet a required level of knowledge and skill.
  • There are two types: SSW Type 1 for skilled jobs, and SSW Type 2 for highly skilled jobs.
  • Specified Skilled Worker Type 1 (SSW-1)

    Eligible fields: nursing care, building cleaning, materials processing and industrial machinery, electrical and electronics manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding and ship machinery, automobile maintenance, aviation, hospitality, agriculture, fisheries, food and beverage manufacturing, and food service.

    Maximum stay: 5 years (renewable)
    Family accompaniment: not permitted in principle
    Requires industry skills test and Japanese language test
  • Specified Skilled Worker Type 2 (SSW-2)

    Eligible fields: construction, and shipbuilding and ship machinery (more fields planned).Length of stay: no limit on renewals.Family members: may be allowed to join you, in some cases.This category needs a higher level of skill and specialized knowledge.

    Higher skill and proficiency required

Who Can Apply?

The SSW program is open to anyone 18 or older who is in good health and ready to work in an approved industry in Japan. There are no strict education requirements, so the program is open to many kinds of candidates. You will need to pass an industry-specific skills test and meet the Japanese language requirement. If you have already completed the Technical Intern Training Program in the same field, you may be exempt from some exams.
